Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of books do you edit?
  • We edit practically any topic or subject save for content that contains gratuitous torture or sadism (even if it has a happy ending). If we find your topic extreme or unsuitable, we will tell you.
Do you edit hard copies of  manuscripts?
  • We can, but we find it much more cost-effective to edit electronic copies.
How does the payment process work?
  • For orders of $25.00 or more, we take half payment up front and the second half payment on delivery. Generally, payment is made via PayPal.
  • For orders of $25.00 or less, full payment up front is requested.
How long will my book take?
  • The time it takes depends on the book's size. A document 25,000 words long usually takes three to five business days. A document 100,000 words long can take about three to four weeks. Also, documents that need heavy editing will take additional time. Our time on your project also depends on our current backlog. If you are facing a deadline, please contact us. We may be able to work with it.
I need my manuscript edited by X date. Can you do it in time?
  • While we work on a first come, first serve basis, we can usually work within deadlines, provided we receive payment and the manuscript on time.  We charge a fee for rush jobs that require us to rearrange our schedule to make your job a top priority. The Rush Fee is scaled depending on the size of the job.
I use grammar websites and/or a program to look for editing mistakes. Why do I need an editor?
  • While some websites and programs are good at catching some errors, they probably are not paying attention to your characters or your story. We actually read your book, and look for specific things like character development and narrative consistency. Every writer needs a second set of eyes!
My novel has an intricate setting/world. Do you pay attention to dates/places/other minute details?
  • When editing a complex work, we take notes to refer to. When we find an inconsistency, we make note of it in your document.
I want someone to edit my thesis. What expertise do you have in X field?
  • We're a small company, so the chances of us having an expert on hand in any field other than the English language are slim. We don't fact-check your thesis, we simply offer corrections to your grammar and syntax. We hope that you have the facts at hand, as it is your thesis.
How do your edits show up in my manuscript?
  • You can choose between the Track Changes Tool, which redlines the corrections, or the Comments Tool, where we suggest what the edits should be. Both of these options are available in Google Docs and Microsoft Word. We generally work with the Track Changes Tool unless you specify otherwise.
What if I don't agree with your edits?
  • Editing can be very subjective. Our edits are suggestions for making your manuscript the best it can be. Not all of our edits may sit well with you, and the ultimate decision is yours.
My book is nonfiction. Do you fact-check?
  • Generally, we do not fact-check unless something stated in the text seems very wrong. This also applies to works of fiction.
When should I get my book edited?
  • Copy and line editing (our specialty) usually happens close to the time of publishing. Some people work on their books for years before they seek out an editor, some people only a few months. There is no set time that you must have your book edited after you have begun work on it. Usually, beta-readers can help an author a great deal before the book reaches the editing stage.
I don't want an editor because I'm afraid they'll change my style.
  • We try not to edit out your personal style. We offer corrections for sentence structure, grammar, and syntax, but we don't rewrite your book. Every writer has a unique style, and we are here to give your work a polish, not to redesign it.
What are you editing in my book?
  • We look for grammar, punctuation, syntax, consistency, readability, and narrative voice. Suggestions regarding plot points and development are only made when they are inconsistent with the rest of the story.
Do you post reviews of the books you edit?
  • No! All works edited by Tahosa Editing Services remain confidential. If you would like us to post a link to your book's website or sale site once it is published, contact us (but only if your book was edited by us). No communications pertaining to your work will be posted on our website, Facebook page, or any other form of social media.
Do you publish books?
  • While we can help you format your book for Kindle (for an additional fee), we are not a full-service publishing house.
Can you help me market my book?
  • We currently do not offer marketing packages, however, if we edited your book, we can post a link to your book on our Books page.
Can you write a query letter for me to send to an agent/publisher?
  • We can proofread a query letter you wrote, but we do not currently offer ghostwriting as a service.
Do you provide an ISBN for my book?
  • No. If you are using a publisher, they should provide one for your book. If you are self-publishing, you can visit www.bowker.com to learn about ISBNs.
I want to speak to someone face-to-face about my book.
  • We do not have a Skype handle at the moment. You can reach us by email or phone. Email: tahosa@enosmills.com. Phone: 970-372-8174.
I'm on a tight budget and I can't pay for editing right now. Can we barter for social media exposure?
  • No. Currently we ask for monetary payment via PayPal. If you cannot make two payments as described above, other arrangements more suited to your needs may be made.
Do I share authorship with my editor? (Does the editor get credit for working on my book?)
  • No. Your book is your book. Our editors work behind the scenes to polish your work, not to take credit or authorship of it.
Other editing companies charge much more than you do. Why are your prices so low?
  • We're a new company, even though there's over fifty years of experience with our combined years. We have specialized in small market publishing, particularly with self-published authors. We know you want to see your book in print, and we know how much time and money you invest in each book. A 100,000 word manuscript could cost you well over $1000 with the larger companies, which often is prohibitive when it comes to self-publishing. We edit for the writer, not the company.
In what languages do you edit?
  • Currently, English is the only language we edit. However, although we are an American company, we do occasionally edit British, Irish, and Australian works.

Do you take currencies other than US Dollars?

  • PayPal can automatically convert your currency to or from US dollars. We typically send an invoice from our website with the USD amount, but we can also convert it to a currency accepted by PayPal so you know exactly what you're paying.

I am from X (nation or country), but my book is in English. Can you edit it so that it sounds like it was written by an English-speaking person?
  • We prefer writers who speak and write English as a first language. This applies to every genre and style we work with. For those of you who are ESL graduates, we recommend beta-readers who speak and write English first before getting edited by us. Sentence structure, verb forms, and colloquialisms vary from language to language, and even region to region. If you have a beta-reader who knows you and what you mean, you will get a lot further than with an editor who has never met you and does not speak your language. Also, if we have trouble reading and understanding your emails, we may have the same difficulty reading your manuscript.
